Doha Meeting on Afghanistan Was Unproductive, Says Russian Envoy
The summit on Afghanistan held earlier this month in Doha yielded no constructive result, Russian Special Representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov, told TAAS news agency on Friday.
Russian Special Presidential Representative for Afghanistan and Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Second Asian Department Zamir Kabulov said that the Doha meeting did not open any good prospects for resolving Afghanistan issues.
Kabulov said that Russia welcomes the efforts of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who tried to unite the camps of the so-called collective West with our regional team concerning Afghanistan.
Furthermore, the senior Russian diplomat pointed out the differences in approach between the Western representatives and the envoys from the regional countries.
“We, the regional partners, including Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, India and Central Asian countries believe that the priority should be to create an inclusive government in Afghanistan. Forming such an inclusive administration will help to resolve many other key issues including women’s rights,” Kabulov said.
Whereas, the Western countries emphasize that the Taliban administration should resolve legal issues first, which seems an unlikely approach the diplomat stated.
According to him, these surmountable differences should be resolved before reaching a comprehensive approach to resolving Afghanistan issues.
Meanwhile, Kabulov reiterated that issues of combating terrorism and drug trafficking should be forgotten, which have already caused problems for the Central Asian countries and the wider region.
Kabulov welcomed the efforts of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Afghanistan, saying that Guterres tried to unite the divided Western countries with the regional team on Afghanistan.
Therefore, to reach a common approach to Afghanistan issues, Guterres said that another meeting will be held in the foreseeable future.
