'Not good enough' - Man Utd legend slams De Gea after FA Cup heartbreak
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has slammed David De Gea for his performance in the 2-1 loss against Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
De Gea endured a tough afternoon against City as he was partially at fault for both of the goals scored by Ilkay Gundogan.
Keane was furious with De Gea and told the club to sign a better goalkeeper in the upcoming transfer window.
He told ITV Sports (via The Mirror): “They need a world-class striker and a goalkeeper, and other players for strength in depth too. I am sick of saying it.
“A top goalkeeper saves that. They get you over the line in big games and that could have been the difference today.
“They need a world-class goalkeeper and he isn’t. We will keep talking about it.
“Some of these players aren’t good enough for United. They have to spend the money to get the players United deserve.”
De Gea has made too many big errors this season
The United goalkeeper won the Premier League Golden Glove for the 2022/23 campaign, but that does not reflect the real picture of his season.
De Gea remained static when Gundogan fired his strike into the net. It would have been tough to reach the ball, but he could have at least tried diving rather than being a spectator.
United came back into the game and finished the first half strongly. However, Gundogan helped City to regain their lead soon after the break.
He volleyed his effort from the edge of the box but did not catch the ball cleanly.
Due to many bodies in the box, De Gea saw the ball a bit late but should have managed to keep it out.
His substandard distribution shows that he is a clear weak link that prohibits Erik ten Hag’s side from playing out from the back.
Mistakes are happening too often now, which is not good enough for a United number one.
De Gea is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of this month but is expected to put pen to paper on fresh terms soon.
Even if he stays put, United should go into the transfer market and get another shot-stopper who can be a robust challenger to De Gea.
