Catholic Bishop Celebrates Upcoming Dobbs Anniversary: “By the Grace of God” We’re Saving Babies
Almost one year ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ended a “blight on our nation” when it overturned Roe v. Wade and allowed states to protect unborn babies again, Catholic Bishop Michael Burbidge said Tuesday.
Burbidge, the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Pro-Life Activities, celebrated the upcoming anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling and the countless faithful pro-lifers who worked for decades to restore legal protections to the unborn.
“We have much to celebrate,” the bishop said in a statement. “By the grace of God, the nearly 50-year reign of national abortion on demand has been put to an end. Roe v. Wade — a seemingly insurmountable blight on our nation — is no more!”
On June 24, pro-lifers across the country will celebrate the 1st anniversary of the Dobbs ruling and the tens of thousands of unborn babies’ lives that it already has saved from abortion. A rally in Washington, D.C. and pro-life conferences are scheduled on that day to mark the victory and encourage pro-lifers to keep working until every life is protected.
In his message Tuesday, Burbidge told pro-lifers to keep up the good work of helping mothers with unplanned or challenging pregnancies, and reminded Catholics to offer mercy to the mothers and fathers of aborted babies.
He said the work to build a culture of life is far from over, and some states have become more pro-abortion since Dobbs.

“Despite this momentous legal victory, sobering and varied challenges lie ahead of us,” the bishop said, noting some states’ “extreme abortion policies that leave children vulnerable to abortion, even until the moment of birth.”
“In this shifting political landscape, we persist confidently in our efforts to defend life,” Burbidge continued. “The work that lies ahead continues to be not just changing laws but also helping to change hearts, with steadfast faith in the power of God to do so.”
The bishop encouraged pro-lifers to remain steadfast in the cause for life because the truth is on their side.
“The task before us begins with our knowledge of the truth and our courage to speak it and to live it with compassion,” he said.
His message ended with an encouragement to join the bishops’ Respect Life Prayer and Action project, which includes regular prayers, alerts to contact Congress about legislation and opportunities to promote a culture of life in local communities. Find out more here.
For nearly 50 years under Roe v. Wade, states were forced to allow abortions for any reason up to viability, and more than 64 million unborn babies were aborted.
Now, because of Dobbs, 15 states protect unborn babies by banning all or most abortions, and others are fighting in court to do the same. Research from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America estimates roughly 60,000 unborn babies have been saved from abortion so far.
