Mike Pence Accuses Donald Trump of Abandoning the Pro-Life Cause
Former Vice President Mike Pence today accused former President Donald Trump of abandoning the pro-life cause.
Pence is not happy that Trump has made comments in recent weeks and months that, to him, appear to be backing off of the pro-life record he crafted as president.
Trump has taken heat from some pro-life advocates for implying that pro-life Americans are to blame for the underperformance in the 2022 elections. He also has not indicated support for a national law to protect babies from abortions. And he has been reticent to say what kinds of state abortion bans he prefers.
In new comments today, Pence highlighted those concerns and says he shares them.
“After leading the most pro-life administration in American history, Donald Trump and others in this race are retreating from the cause of the unborn,” Pence said.
“The sanctity of life has been our party’s calling for half a century — long before Donald Trump was a part of it. Now he treats it as an inconvenience, even blaming our election losses in 2022 on overturning Roe v. Wade,” the former VP and Indiana governor added.
Pence’s comments come on the heels of Trump taking credit for overturning the nation’s worst Supreme Court decision.
Trump, during a televised Fox News town hall last night, again took credit for the Dobbs decision last year that has allowed states to protect babies from abortions.
To his credit, Trump appointed Justices Beil Gorusch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett — who comprised three of the justices in the majority that voted to reverse Roe. And Trump reminded the audience and TV views that he was responsible for their appointments and the resulting pro-life victory.
“I did something that nobody thought was possible. I got rid of Roe v Wade and by doing that, it put pro-lifers in a very strong negotiating position,” Trump said. “Now they’re negotiating different things.”
When it comes to future abortion bans, Trump says he want to make sure exceptions like rape and incest are included in such legislation.

“I happen to be of the Ronald Reagan school in terms of exemptions, where you have the life of the mother, rape and incest,” he said. “For me, that’s something that works very well and for probably 80, 85%, because don’t forget, we do have to win elections.”
“When you didn’t have the exceptions, they went after the people viciously – the ads – and those people generally speaking didn’t do very well in terms of election,” Trump explained.
In actuality, every pro-life governor who signed an abortion ban won re-election in 2022 whether the ban had those exceptions or not.
Trump also said Democrats are the real extremists on abortion.
“I also made them the radicals,” he said. “They are able and willing to kill babies in the ninth month. … That’s radical.”
“Pro-life isn’t radical. What’s radical is killing a baby in the seventh month, eighth month, ninth month, or even after the baby’s born,” Trump said.
The new comments follow on Trump’s recent remarks defending the exceptions and reminding voters about his three Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe.
Trump said in an interview recently with political commentator John Solomon on his podcast, “John Solomon Reports,” that he supports exceptions for instances of rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother, the latter of which virtually all pro-life Americans support.
“I’m a person that feels that the exceptions are very important for a lot of reasons,” he said.
“If you don’t have the exceptions, it’s very, very hard — and I think that’s been proven — it’s very, very hard to win an election,” Trump argued.
“Now I don’t say you do it for that, you do it for other reasons, moral reasons,” he continued. “You do it for what you really believe, but it still is a very, very difficult thing to overcome I would say from the standpoint of an election.”
Trump also recently said he would do more to promote adoption as a solution to abortion.
