I’m a hair whizz – you’ve been curling your hair all wrong and it’s frying your ends, here’s what you should do instead
WE ALL love putting in a little effort for an occasion, whether that be a concert or a fancy dinner out.
Often the first tool in our arsenal is the curling iron, which is used to create those locks dreams are made of.
But one woman has warned people over the technique they use, explaining that they could be ruining the ends of their hair.
Taking to her social media, Katie explained: “Let’s talk about the number one mistake I see people do when curling their hair.”
The brunette beauty, who had most of her mane clipped up, then took her pink curling iron and smoothed it over one strand of hair.
She then twisted it up from the bottom to her roots, trapping her ends.
“Are you doing that?” she then questioned, before removing the iron and picking up a light blue one to demonstrate the correct technique.
“So let’s talk about it,” she continued, adding: “I’m going to use the iron that’s not on for this so that I don’t over expose my hair to heat.
“When you curl your hair like this… The hair that is on the iron, your fragile ends that don’t need as much heat are getting the most heat.
“Then each time you spin, each layer of hair is getting less heat because it’s laying on top of another layer of hair.”
Pointing at the top layer of hair on the iron, she said: “This part right here gets the least amount of heat.
“And if you leave the curling iron on long enough to get this [the iron] as hot as it needs to be, your ends are going to be crispy and fried.”
TikTok user @katiewithwildroots went on to argue that you’ll get more curls at the bottom compared to the top.
Grabbing her pink curling iron once again, she then demonstrated the correct way to style your hair.
Clamping her hair at the top of one strand, she then smoothed it down slightly before curling it.
“Spin and see how that top hair is getting direct heat from the iron,” she shared.
Katie then moved down the strand a little more before twisting a second time, repeating this movement several times until the entire strand was done.
She explained that using this method means you don’t have to leave your hair on the heat for as long and the ends don’t need to be touched, which means they’ll stay protected.
Removing the curling iron, she added: “That way you get a more even curl from the base all the way to the end.”
People flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts as one person wrote: “I like this method. Until you take the curler out and there’s a bump. I hate that bump! I’m picky and my hair needs to lay flat”.
Katie replied: “Amy is right if you want less volume at the top, don’t go as far up. Hold iron completely vertical. Iron direction influences volume!”
Another said: “Finally someone explained this… I always wondered what I was doing wrong”.
A third shared: “this was incredibly helpful, I’ve always hated curling my hair cuz it’d be flat at the top! Curling my hair today now,” followed by a red heart emoji.
While a fourth added: “THANK YOUUU OMGG. The first way pulls my hair out more too, lot rougher on ur head,” with a crying with laughter emoji.
