9 Killed, 20 Injured in Restaurant Attack in Somalia
At least 9 people were killed and 20 others injured in an attack on a luxurious restaurant claimed by Al-Shabab terrorist group in the Somali capital Mogadishu, according to police.
There were six civilians and three soldiers among those killed at the popular restaurant, police said in a statement. Furthermore, some 20 wounded people had been carried from the scene, the director of Aamin ambulance service said.
The Al-Shabab, an affiliated Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the brutal attack, Reuters reported.
Security forces have rescued at least 84 civilians from the restaurant which came under attack by the Al-Qaeda-linked fighters, according to the police statement.
Security forces were engaged with the attackers for nearly six hours last night, but have not provided further details about the attackers’ numbers and their fate.
Nearly seven months ago, Al-Shabab militant fighters, who control parts of Somalia, attacked a hotel in Mogadishu and killed nine people.
In a separate attack, the insurgent fighters killed 54 Ugandan security forces nearly two weeks ago, who were on a mission of the African Union peacekeepers in Somalia.
Al-Shabab controlled a vast area of Somalia before being pushed back in government counteroffensives since last year. However, the terrorists remain capable of launching significant attacks on government, commercial, and military targets.
