Report: Tottenham regular’s future ‘in the balance’ due to ‘stylistic clash’ with Postecoglou
The Sun have claimed that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could be axed by Tottenham Hotspur this summer snce there are doubts over whether the midfielder would fit within Ange Postecoglou’s style of play.
Hojbjerg has been a mainstay in Tottenham’s midfield over the last three seasons, carving an important role under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.
However, Spurs have now chosen to go in a different direction by bringing in Postecoglou, who favours a possession-based, high-intensity approach rather than the counter-attacking style implemented by his predecessors.
Hojbjerg’s future at Tottenham is uncertain
The Sun now claimed that there could be a ‘stylistic clash’ between Hojbjerg and Postecoglou, with the Dane perceived as being more at home in a defensive system such as the ones employed by Conte and Mourinho.
The report states that the midfielder’s suitability for the Australian’s system seems ‘less natural’, which is why there is some ‘uncertainty’ over whether he will be at the club at the start of next season.
The publication suggests that with the 27-year-old having two years left to run on his contract in North London, his future is now ‘in the balance’.
Hojbjerg joined Tottenham in August 2020 while Mourinho was in charge in a deal worth around £15million from Southampton (Sky Sports) and has gone on to make 145 appearances across all competitions for the club, scoring ten goals and providing sixteen assists (transfermarkt).
Spurs Web Opinion
I do not think we should completely disregard the possibility that Hojbjerg could adapt to Postecoglou’s system as the Dane is tactically quite aware and we must not forget that he played under Pep Guardiola at Barcelona. However, having said that, I would not be too disappointed if the 27-year-old is sold as he is someone we can certainly upgrade on.
