LA DAILY NEWS ALL-AREA GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD 2023
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Meagan Humphries, Castaic, Jr.
Is there anything Meagan Humphries can’t do on the track?
Humphries’ efforts this spring showed she’s the epitome of an elite athlete. The standout junior showcased her speed, strength, balance and competitive spirit by competing in seven events, but there were four in particular that make her the Daily News girls track and field Athlete of the Year.
Humphries crowned herself a four-time CIF Southern Section Division 3 champion when she won the 200 meters with a wind-legal time of 23.85 seconds, the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches), the long jump (20-.025) and the triple jump (39-10.75). That weekend in mid-May qualified her to compete in all four events at the CIF Masters Meet.
At the Masters Meet Humphries performed again, proving she isn’t just capable of one remarkable weekend, but has the ability to replicate it as great athletes do. Humphries won the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet 7 inches, placed third in the long jump (19-3.75), sixth in the triple jump (38-7.75) and fourth in the 200, crossing the finish line in a wind-aided time of 23.54 seconds.
All four marks qualified her to compete in the CIF State Championships in Clovis.
In the CIF State finals, Humphries finished second in the triple jump (40-6.25), second in the long jump (20-3.25), fourth in the high jump (5-8) and fifth in the 200 (24.02).
Humphries was also the Foothill League champion in the 200, the high jump, the long jump and the triple jump. At the Arcadia Invitational, she won the triple jump (39-9.5) and was runner-up in the high jump (5-8).
She capped her junior campaign as a four-time CIF-SS champion, CIF Master Meet champion in the high jump, and a two-time silver medalist at the CIF State championships in the triple jump and long jump.
Humphries’ personal best in the high jump (5-10.25) and the triple jump (40-8.75) were California’s top marks this season. Her high jump mark ranked 10th nationally.
