Mum crammed her crying two-month-old twins in a milk crate and biked across city
A mum has been jailed in the US after cycling across a city with her twin babies in a milk crate strapped to the bike.
Witnesses saw Blossum Kirby, 36, struggling to control the bicycle while travelling across Indianapolis, Indiana, in searing heat last June.
Footage filmed by a shocked onlooker who confronted Kirby showed the wailing twins crammed into the tight space wearing only nappies.
One of the infants was slouched forward with its head not properly supported.
The other laid with its neck at an angle as its head was pushed to the side by the wall of the crate, which appeared to be fastened using just a single bungee cord.
Over the babies’ screams, the onlooker, Brian Henderson, could be heard telling Kirby: ‘You can’t have those babies in there like that, ma’am’
‘If you hit a bump or a pothole you’re going to break one of their legs.’
The 36-year-old then appears to start walking off while other witnesses discuss calling the police.
She was soon arrested while the children were taken to a nearby hospital where they were treated for sunburns and scratches.
Another witness, Suezanne Lynch, told Fox 59: ‘She had told me that prior to me stopping her, she had one baby in the front and one baby in the back.
‘She couldn’t control the bike that well, so she put both babies in the one milk crate in the front. [She said] that was her way of transporting the babies any time she left.’
Kirby also reportedly told responding officers she didn’t see a problem with the mode of transport, which she claimed she used because she doesn’t own a car.
She was convicted of neglect of a dependent, though it isn’t clear who currently has custody of the children.
