I live next to an iconic biscuit factory – but I’m furious as I can’t sleep properly… something needs to be done
A RESIDENT who lives next to an iconic biscuit factory is furious because he can’t sleep properly.
Teacake giant Tunnock’s wants to turn a patch of land next to its base in Uddingston, Lanarkshire into storage buildings.
The biscuit maker has submitted plans to South Lanarkshire Council to use the site for holding pallets.
But local Alan Oswald has hit out over noise fears and has pleaded for planners to limit Tunnock’s to daytime operations only at the site.
He said: “I will directly face onto this building, it will be around 20 metres from my bedroom.
“Will there be a limitation as to the times of the day and night this area will be used to remove and deposit pallets?
“Hearing the sudden crashing of heavy wooden pallets would be severely impactful on the residents of my building’s ability to enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep.
“I propose that this area should not be in use between the hours of 8pm and 8am to safeguard the comfort of homeowners.”
Tunnock’s described the plans as a “proposed erection of temporary pallet storage buildings” which will be used for the next three years.
The biscuit brand has been based in Uddingston since it was founded in 1890.
It has bought a number of buildings and sites around the town in recent years including the former police station.
Boyd Tunnock, 90, was knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2019.
Sir Boyd, who created the famous Tunnock’s teacake in 1956, revealed she told him she preferred the teacakes over caramel wafers during the ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
South Lanarkshire Council will issue a decision in due course.
Tunnock’s were contacted for comment.
It comes after residents living next to the UK’s smelliest factory said the odour is so horrific it made them suicidal.
