Report: Spurs have not told player whether they intend to sign him yet
Clement Lenglet currently finds himself in ‘no man’s land’ after his loan deal with Tottenham Hotspur ended, and Barcelona try desperately to sell the Frenchman this summer.
The defender spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan with Tottenham and did a fairly decent job when called upon. Lenglet amassed 35 appearances for the Lilywhites last season across all competitions (Transfermarkt).
Spurs are in dire need of defensive reinforcements as Ange Postecoglou looks to repair and rebuild a squad that struggled last year in pretty much every area.
According to Diario Sports, Barcelona are very keen to offload Clement Lenglet and would sell him to Tottenham Hotspur for as little as £5 million.
That appears to be to the liking of Tottenham, and both clubs are reportedly eager to get a deal completed by the end of June (Sport.es).
The latest from Mundo Deportivo claims Barcelona are ‘working against the clock’ to get the transfer completed, and Tottenham are ‘not giving up’ on bringing the 27-year-old to the club.
Spurs are keeping Clement Lenglet in the dark
However, Marca are more dubious about the chances of the transfer going through. That’s because, despite having a contract until 2026 with Barcelona, the La Liga side have made it clear they do not want him, and Spurs let him return to Spain a few days ago.
Tottenham announced they were “dispensing with his services” upon the conclusion of his loan deal and the player has now returned to Barcelona. Now, it seems no one at Barcelona has received “communication of their intentions” for Lenglet.
It seems there will be a surplus of centre halves at Barca next season, and it is expected they will “look for a sale” when it comes to Lenglet.
As for Spurs, however, “no one has told him anything” and it remains to be seen whether he will rejoin the Lilywhites on a permanent basis this summer.
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s pretty standard that a loan signing would return to his parent club at the end of the deal, even if a permanent move is in the offing. I expect this transfer to be wrapped up within the next week.
