Bank loans that go bad because of business failure have a mechanism for resolution that has helped them clean up their balance sheets. Wilful default was kept out of this process. But the scale of the problem now requires a systemic solution. Earlier this month, RBI set out guidelines for banks on how to go about recovering debt from wilful defaulters.
