Thousands Report Problems Using Twitter As New Limits Have Been Installed
Elon Musk announced that he is limiting the number of tweets users may read daily as thousands of Twitter users reported problems accessing the social media platform on Saturday.
According to the website, there were over 7,000 instances of users reporting problems with Twitter in the United States, while over 5,000 complaints were made from the United Kingdom.
Twitter issues have also been reported by users in Singapore, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Germany.
Musk stated that verified accounts could only read 6,000 posts daily in a tweet on Saturday afternoon. Posts per day for unverified users are dramatically reduced to 600. Only 300 posts can be accessed daily by new, unverified users.
He provided an update and stated that the rate limitations would shortly rise to 8,000 for verified users, 800 for unverified users, and 400 for new unconfirmed users. About three hours later, he wrote, “Now to 10k, 1k & 0.5k.”
However, when user complaints started circulating on Saturday, company founder Elon Musk wrote in a post on the social media platform that Twitter has implemented temporary reading limits to address “extreme levels” of data scraping and system manipulation.
Twitter also declared that users must have social media accounts to access tweets. Elon Musk called this decision a “temporary emergency measure.”
The outage on Saturday is not the first one Twitter has experienced in recent months. Users were prevented from posting for roughly 90 minutes in February after seeing a warning that said, “You are over the daily limit for sending Tweets.” Users experienced a temporary inability to load photos or click on links in March.
Other failures coincided with news of Twitter’s data centre closure and significant staff layoffs, which Musk claimed were essential for the company’s financial stability.
