Scallywags rock Padgett, Clams fall to Outer Banks at home
Edenton, NC – Bad starting pitching, Bad defense, and quiet bats lead to another defeat for the Steamers. The Outer Banks Scallywags defeated the Edenton Steamers, 9-5, Saturday night at Historic Hicks Field. The Scallywags scored eight runs in the first three innings against Clams ace Chandler Padgett.
Padgett’s troubles started right out of the gate in the first inning. Outer Banks loaded the bases on two walks and an error by Luke Myers to bring Scallywags shortstop Alex Ulloa to the dish.
Padgett hung a curveball that Ulloa crushed a home run to left field to put Outer Banks up 4-0. The home run was the second one given up by the Rocky Mount native this season through his first four starts.
In the top of the third inning, the Scallywags continued to lay siege on the Clams’ right-handed starter. With two runners on, Outer Banks first baseman Max Puckett lined a two-RBI double to right field to put the Scallywags up 6-0.
The visitors from Manteo scored two more times in the frame to take an 8-0 lead.
Padgett finished the night with 4.0 innings pitched, five hits, eight runs, six earned runs, four walks, and three strikeouts. It is the first time this season Padgett has given up more than 1 run in a start and failed to pitch through the fifth inning.
In relief, the Steamers’ bullpen kept the Outer Banks offense at bay. Tyrus Baumgardner, John Horton, and Reuben Costin combined for 5 innings, one run allowed, three hits, and seven strikeouts to follow up Padgett.
After allowing nine runs in three innings in the 10-9 loss Thursday against Clayton the Edenton pen has thrown 13.1 innings with one run allowed, six hits, and nineteen strikeouts against Norfolk and Outer Banks.
At the plate, the Steamers’ offense struggled to get runners on and in on the base paths without free passes.
The Clams were held without a hit for the first three innings against Scallywags starter Jacob Ragini. In the fourth inning, the teal and black started to crawl back.
Edenton scored five runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Khris Morris, an RBI single by Tyler Overaitis, a passed ball by catcher Jack Ryan, and a bases-loaded walk from Drifton Padgett. The Steamers recorded three hits and four walks in the five-run outburst.
With the momentum on the Clams’ side, the Scallywags turned to reliever Evan Panjwani. Panjwani wiped out the Steamers’ attack by working inside and outside of the strike zone to perfection.
The southpaw from Long Island University tossed 5.1 scoreless innings, allowed two hits, and retired seven Steamers on strikes.
With the loss, the Clams have lost their first home game to a team from the Outer Banks since the Dare Devils came to Historic Hicks Field and won in 2013.
The Steamers’ next matchup will be Sunday night when the Clams battle the Tarboro River Bandits at Historic Hicks Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
