India to Host SCO Summit For the First Time on Tuesday
India will host the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit for the first time in a virtual format on Tuesday, July 4, since becoming a member of the SCO, media reported.
According to Indian media, Narendra Modi the Prime Minister of India will virtually chair the 23rd SCO summit on Tuesday, in which Afghanistan’s situation will also be discussed.
Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson of India’s Foreign Ministry told media that previously New Delhi had not announced to be physically hosting the SCO summit.
The SCO meeting comes as India had already achieved permanent membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
It is worth mentioning that the Indian Prime Minister has also invited his Pakistani counterpart, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to virtually attend this grand meeting.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister announced that Shehbaz Sharif has accepted the invitation and will attend the summit accordingly.
The summit will see participation from President Xi Jinping of China and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan along with the leaders of a number of Central Asian countries. President Vladimir Putin of Russia is also expected to attend the summit. The previous edition of the leader’s level meeting took place in Samarkand, in Uzbekistan, in September last year.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is consisting of eight countries including India, Pakistan, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
