PCL All-Stars smash TSL All-Stars, Steamers shine in win
Manteo, NC – A matchup between the leagues best ended in a one-sided affair. The Premier Collegiate League All-Stars defeated the Tidewater Summer League All-Stars, 10-0, Thursday night at Coy Tillet Field. In the victory, all seven Clams served as key contributors.
After a clean first inning for both teams, a familiar face got the action going for the South. Geomar Santana, batting fifth, worked a walk before River Bandit Armani Newton whacked a two-run home run to right field.
The South went on to score five more runs in the bottom of the second. Four of the five runs were driven in by Steamers. Luke Myers, Drifton Padgett, and Ryan Kay all picked up RBI singles in the inning as each Clam reached base in the frame.
On the hill, Chandler Padgett was the first Clam used on the PCL staff. Padgett came in and tossed one inning, allowed one hit, one walk, and struck out three batters in the third.
After the two sides traded a pair of scoreless frames, the Clams All-Stars shined again in the sixth. In the top of the inning, right-handed arm Ben Bausas struck out two TSL All-Stars in a clean 1-2-3 inning.
In the bottom half, Santana reached for the second time on a line drive double into the left-center field gap. The catcher came around to score one of two runs in the inning to put the PCL All-Stars up, 9-0.
In the ninth inning with the PCL All-Stars well in control, John Horton came in to finish the job. Horton capped off the shutout with one inning, one hit allowed, and two strikeouts.
At the plate, the Clams went 4/13 with four runs scored and four RBIs. On the mound Bausas, Horton, and Padgett threw 3.0 innings, seven strikeouts, and allowed just two hits and no runs.
The Steamers’ first game after the break will be on Saturday when the Clams battle the Greenbrier Knights at Historic Hicks Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
