Jack Smith's probe into Trump has already cost most than $9 million: report
The Justice Department's two investigations into Donald Trump have cost more than $9 million in the five months since Special Counsel Jack Smith started them, CBS News reported Friday.
The probes are focusing on Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election as well as his handling of classified information that he allegedly took from the White House and stored at his Mar-a-Lago resort. Trump and his longtime aide Walt Nauta were for obstructing investigators in the documents case.
CBS News' report stated that Smith's two investigations "directly cost $5,428,579 in funding from the Justice Department's permanent indefinite funding for independent counsel probes as prescribed by congressionally authorized statute between Nov. 18, 2022, and March 31, 2023," which included "more than $2.6 million for personnel compensation and benefits" and "approximately $1.8 million for contractual services like litigation and IT support."
"Another $3.8 million was spent on FBI and U.S. Marshal Service personnel connected to the two Smith probes for investigative matters and protective details."
