Cubs Draft Infielder with 13th Overall Pick
The Chicago Cubs have drafted Maryland shortstop Matt Shaw with the 13th overall pick the 2023 MLB Draft.
The right-handed hitting infielder hit 24 home runs and posted a 1.142 OPS in 62 games with Maryland during his junior season in college.
The 21-year-old was named the 2023 Big Ten Player of the Year.
Shaw had a slash line of .341/.445/.697, with 43 walks and 42 strikeouts in 317 plate appearances at Maryland during the 2023 college season.
During his three years at Maryland, Shaw started games at second base, third base and shortstop, while briefly getting some starts in left field.

Shaw might be one of the better college hitters in the Draft class. He rarely strikes out and draws walks while making consistently hard contact. He can drive the ball to all fields and he showed off impressive opposite-field power last year for Maryland, with many of his homers going out to right and right-center field. He’s a plus runner who is a legitimate basestealing threat.
Shaw is the first position player the Cubs have selected with their first round pick since Ed Howard, who was drafted 16th overall out of high school in 2020.
At 13th overall, Shaw is now the highest drafted player in the history of Maryland’s baseball program.
