Tewkesbury School urgently locked down in emergency as cops race to the scene after ‘incident’
A SECONDARY school has been urgently locked down in an emergency as cops race to the scene after an “incident”.
Tewkesbury School, on Ashchurch Road, in Gloucestershire, is currently surrounded by emergency services.
It is not yet known why the school has been put into a lockdown as police continue to carry out enquires.
Pictures from the scene show multiple patrol cars and vans at the school gates.
Cops also look to be speaking with concerned parents at the entrance.
Local residents have reported sightings of helicopters and ambulances.
Gloucestershire Police said: “Emergency services are at the scene of an incident at Tewkesbury School on Ashchurch Road.
“The school is currently in lockdown while police are at the scene. More information will be released in due course.”
It is understood parents were informed around 9.30am – but have not had any updates since.
One parent said: “[It’s a] shame Tewkesbury school can’t let us parents know what’s happening.”
A message sent out read: “A message to all parents and carers: Tewkesbury Academy has gone into lockdown this morning.
“Please do not attend the site or ring. We will make more information available shortly.”
Nearby school Tirlebrook Primary has also been urged to keep pupils and staff inside while officers deal with the issue.
Posting on Facebook the primary school said: “Dear Families, an incident has occurred this morning at Tewkesbury Academy (Tewkesbury School) and we have been advised by Tewkesbury Police to put in place a lock down.
“We have a police presence at school and are being fully supported at this time.
“We would like to reassure all families that children at Tirlebrook and Little Oaks are safe and well.
“We must ask that families do not come to school during this time as this could compromise the police operation currently underway and also compromise the safety of the children.
“During this situation all school staff will be supporting the children and liaising with the police so we would ask that you do not attempt to communicate with the school office.
“We thank you all for your support and will update you as soon as possible when we know more.”
