Sunil Gavaskar Disappointed With Rohit Sharma’s Performance As Indian Captain
India skipper Rohit Sharma has failed to live up to the expectations that came when he was named India’s all-format captain. While the team has done well in bilateral series, India’s performance in the ICC events have not been great under Rohit Sharma.
The team has played two ICC events under Sharma – T20 World Cup 2022 and the WTC final, failing miserably in both events. The team also failed to make it to the final of the Asia Cup 2022, losing to Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Along with a disappointing show in multi-national events, the team also suffered ODI series defeats to Australia and Bangladesh.
Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar reflected on Rohit Sharma’s tenure as India captain and said that Rohit’s performance as a leader has been disappointing.
“I expected more from him (Rohit). In India it is different, but when you do well overseas that is really the test. That is where he has been a little disappointing. Even in the T20 format, with all the experience of the IPL, hundreds of matches as captain, with a mix of best IPL players not being able to get to the finals has been disappointing.”

Sunil Gavaskar Questions Indian Tactics Under Rohit Sharma
Gavaskar also questioned a few bizarre Indian tactics and the performance of Indian pacers under Rohit.
“They should be asking questions, ‘Why did you field first?’ Okay, it was explained at the toss that it was overcast and all. The question after that should be, ‘You didn’t know about Travis Head’s weakness against the short ball?’ Why was the bouncer employed only when he had scored 80 runs. You know, the moment Head came in to bat, in the commentary box, we had Ricky Ponting saying, ‘Bounce him, bounce him.’ Everyone knew about it but we didn’t try,” he pointed out.
