I was pulling weeds in my backyard when I found a buried bag – I had an inkling about the contents and it scared me
AN INTERIOR designer has described her dismay when she discovered a mysterious object in her backyard.
It was while restoring her yard that she found a buried bag as she pulled up weeds.
Her fear was very real as she examined the contents unsure what to expect.
“My husband and I have been pulling weeds in our backyard when we found something strange,” explained Liz Lovery (@lizlovery) in her post.
Liz is a very popular internal designer with over 1.2 million followers and another 24.9 million likes on her TikTok, where her remit is: “Interior design, home décor, and style tips, renovation.”
But it was a garden transformation that she focused on in this post and she wasn’t prepared for the fright it gave her.
As she and her husband worked hard to give their garden an upgrade, she found something quickly surmised to be a headstone.
“We both just bought this house a few months ago from a family who lived here for 65 years,” she said.
But the discovery of the stone was quickly followed by something else – a plastic bag.
“I think we may have come across a pet grave,” she grimaced. “Let’s find out for certain. Please don’t be what I think this is.”
In a hole, there were signs of a plastic bag long buried emerging from the earth.
Her vigorous digging changed to a more careful sifting of the area: “I think there is something buried here.”
As she gently removed the earth, akin to an archaeologist finding hidden treasures, she said, “There’s a bag under here.”
Her husband, however, continued to work in the background, completely “unfazed.”
“Suspicious bag,” was scrawled across the screen. “There’s a plastic bag in here.”
She picked up a fragment and carefully examined it, then made her evaluation: “I think this is a bone. Could be a stick?” while she pulled a face to the camera. “That was scary.”
Upon closer examination, she realized she had jumped to conclusions.
“False alarm. I don’t think it was a pet grave. It was a strange-looking stone that looked like it could be a headstone and a buried plastic bag.
“So unless this pet or dog has been buried for several decades there’s no sign of it left.”
There was no doubt, however, that the experience left its mark: “That really scared me, freaked me out for a second,” she wrote.
Commenters were understanding but said backyard pet burials are hardly unusual.
“Lol, my backyard is literally a pet cemetery. Name it, they are all buried somewhere,” was a view shared by many.
Similarly for this viewer: “Me thinking of all my dead rabbits, hamsters, rats, and fish we had funerals for in my backyard.”
The closing comment from this follower summed it up very well.
“When my mom sold the family home two years ago she did not tell them about the seven cats buried in the flower beds and around the pool deck,” she said.
