The Floyd Effect Review (no replies)
Normally I steer clear of tour information, but the band had announced they would be doing the whole of Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon, so that was a good 90 minutes of the set sorted! So what else would they do?
They came on stage just after 8.00pm and went straight into Echoes from Meddle. Just under 30 minutes of prog royalty, and half of that album - well it was one side on the old LP! They have a new guitarist and singer, Dale Taylor, from last time, and he has Gilmour looks and has a very good voice. He nailed this track.
Gordon, the keyboard player, introduced the concept of a whole album. A number were mentioned in dispatches, however Wish You Were Here was always the choice. So we went through the tracks. Shine on You Crazy Diamond parts 1-5, Welcome to the Machine, Have a Cigar, Wish You Were Here and finally Shine on You Crazy Diamond parts 6-9 finished the album and the first set.
As with the rest of the gig, there were excellent effects a visual displays on the screen throughout.
The band returned after a short break and we were treated to a couple from The Wall. Firstly Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2 and then Young Lust. Then the band did the whole of Dark side of the Moon. However it didn’t go without incident, halfway through Time, the fire alarm went off which turned power off for the stage briefly. Not sure what it is about these guys, because it did it last year too!
After a reset, the band restarted the track from the guitar solo, to a big cheer, and carried on! There was a fantastic performance from the Floydettes, who nailed Great Gig in the Sky. The second set was completed by Comfortably Numb, another track from The Wall.
The band returned for an encore and after saying that they were going to have fun, we were treated to the starts of Smoke on the Water and Don’t Fear the Reaper however they decided to stick to Floyd and did The Gold it’s in The… off Obscured by Clouds, an album I love. The final track was Run Like Hell also off the Wall.
In all we had over 3 hours of live music, almost totally Pink Floyd, although Bad Moon Rising also featured briefly!
Superb set, by superb musicians and I look forward to next year. Thanks guys for making that 6 hour journey to come and perform for us.
