Las Vegas cop set to go on trial for stealing almost $165K during casino heists
A Las Vegas Police officer is set to go on trial this Monday after he was accused of stealing almost $165,000 from casinos, the Associated Press reported.
According to prosecutors, Caleb Rogers, 35, was a gambling addict who was desperate as he became increasingly crushed by debt. He allegedly carried out three robberies over a span of four months while armed with his department-issued weapon.
Rogers wore a face mask, dark clothing and black latex gloves during the robberies. Witnesses noticed he had a “unique gait” as he ran back to his vehicle, limping “because of a problem with his leg,” according to prosecutors.
Rogers was a seven-year police veteran with the Las Vegas metro police as an active-duty patrol officer. He's still employed but is currently on unpaid leave.
Those testifying at his trial will include his brother, Josiah Rogers, who identified him looking at surveillance video of the robberies.
During the investigation, a detective asked Rogers if anything could have been done to prevent the robberies.
“Nothing,” Rogers replied.
