Whistleblower's claims in GOP Hunter Biden probe destroyed by Delaware prosecutor
A federal prosecutor disputed claims by Republican lawmakers and a purported IRS whistleblower about the Hunter Biden investigation.
David Weiss, the U.S. attorney for Delaware, sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee stating that he had never asked for special counsel authority in the investigation of President Joe Biden's son, who last month agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor income tax filing and enter a pretrial diversion program that allows him to avoid prosecution on a gun charge, reported Politico.
“To clarify an apparent misperception and to avoid future confusion, I wish to make one point clear: in this case, I have not requested Special Counsel designation pursuant to” the statue for appointing a special counsel, Weiss wrote in the letter to Sen. Lindsey Graham, the Judiciary Committee's ranking Republican.
Graham had asked Weiss, who reached the agreement with the younger Biden, about the whistleblower claims that he was denied special counsel status, and the senator asked whether he had been prevented from bringing charges in Washington, D.C., and California.
Weiss told Graham that he spoke with unspecified department officials about potentially being granted "special attorney" status, which would have allowed him to bring charges outside his district, but he said he had never been denied the authority to bring charges in any jurisdiction.
