Tewkesbury school: ‘Hero’ maths teacher ‘stabbed by teen boy’ at school named as Jamie Sansom, 27, as boy, 15, arrested
A BRAVE teacher allegedly stabbed by a 15-year-old boy in a secondary school has been named.
Jamie Sansom, 27, was knifed at Tewkesbury School, on Ashchurch Road, in Gloucestershire, this morning.
The school was surrounded by emergency services with armed police swarming the grounds after it was locked down this morning.
Maths teacher Jamie, from Newport, Wales, suffered a single stab wound and was found in the school corridor, cops said.
The 27-year-old was rushed to hospital with a suspected stab wound injury.
Police have this afternoon said Jamie remains in a stable condition.
A teenage boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the horror attack.
Jamie has been a maths teacher in Gloucestershire since September 2017, having graduated from Cardiff University, according to his LinkedIn profile.
And he was hailed as a “hero” and a “wonderful teacher” by parents after the incident.
Speaking to The Telegraph, a relieved parent said: “Thank goodness, it’s all over.
“I hope Mr Sansom pulls through ok. He is a wonderful teacher and I wish him a speedy recovery.”
While another parent described Mr Sansom as “one of the best teachers I’ve ever met”.
They added: “Maths can be a difficult subject to teach and he has had outstanding results with his pupils.”
Cops were called to the scene around 9am after receiving reports a pupil had stabbed a staff member.
Pictures from the scene showed multiple patrol cars, vans and six unmarked cars at the school gates.
Cops were also speaking with concerned parents at the entrance while locals reported sightings of helicopters and around three ambulances.
The teenage suspect, a 15-year-old from Tewkesbury was arrested about two hours later in the nearby Stoke Orchard area on suspicion of attempted murder.
School Principal Kathleen McGillycuddy said in a statement: “We appreciate that this morning has been a worrying time for all associated with Tewkesbury Academy. We are writing to reassure you that all pupils remain safe and well.
“We were alerted shortly before 9am this morning to reports of a serious incident which left a male member of staff in need of hospital treatment.
“The school was locked down and Police were called immediately when we became aware of this incident. We have since been taking advice from the Police on when and how to share updates with you.
“In the last few minutes Police have arrested a teenage boy in connection with this incident. In conjunction with Police advice the lockdown remains in place as a precaution. We hope to be able to provide a further update once cleared by Police in the near future.
“Thank you for patience and understanding at this difficult time.”
The force said this morning: “An adult has been taken to hospital with a suspected stab wound following an incident at Tewkesbury School.
“Police were called around 9.10am today (Monday 10 July) with a report a pupil had stabbed a teacher.
“A teenage boy has been arrested in connection with the incident.
“Parents or carers of pupils at the school are being advised to go to Dobbies Garden Centre on Diamond Road where police will be able to offer assistance.”
