Nicolle Wallace lambasts Tuberville's 'hissy fit': The GOP 'can no longer claim' to be pro-military
MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace lambasted her former party, which, until Donald Trump, she had dedicated her entire professional life to. She is now taking them down further, this time due to Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), who has left the U.S. Marine Corps without a leader due to his own personal crusade against abortion.
For 164 years, through two world wars, the Marines have had a leader. Today is the first time without.
"Thanks to that one guy, Alabama senator, Tommy Tuberville, and a month's long hissy fit, no such senate-approved replacement exists today," explained Wallace. "Here's where it gets alarming: Over the next two months, the staff of the Army, Navy, Air Force, along with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs will see their terms come to the same end. It is a Republican-made problem that figures to get much, much worse. But today marked the fall of the first domino."
She noted that back in 2014, Tuberville was coaching the losing team in the military bowl. But today, he's blocking 184 military promotions. None are out of concern that they are qualified.
"But because of the hissy fit," Wallace explained. "He disapproves of a Pentagon policy that provides service members and paid stipends for abortion care or fertility treatments. Now, he says the Senate can just work around him if they want to."
Indeed, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) could hold a days-long floor vote that keeps Republicans from leaving for the August recess so that they can vote on the 184 promotions. It would allow each Republican the opportunity to vote on whether to shut down Tuberville and promote the military members.
Wallace described such a move as being like an airline ticket agent "suggesting you ride a bike from New York to L.A. instead of rebooking" after a flight cancelation.
"Now, the diminishing effect is obvious," Wallace continued. "So, too, is the reality that today's Republican Party, whose front-runner has been indicted for leaving classified documents around his party like candy in a candy dish, can no longer lay any claim to being the party that stands with the U.S. military. Remember the wisdom of Maya Angelou: when someone tells you who they are over and over and over again," believe them.
