Mookie Betts humbly faded his own chances to win Home Run Derby: ‘They’re low… but they’re not zero’
Mookie Betts is a perennial All-Star, a two-time World Series champion, and assuredly one of the handful of best players in baseball. But, even while he can and does mash home runs fairly often, the Los Angeles Dodgers superstar understands his strengths and limitations.
And he’s keeping his expectations low for the 2023 Home Run Derby accordingly — especially amidst a loaded field.
Betts didn’t project much confidence when asked about his chances of slamming enough dingers to win the classic midsummer home run contest. In fact, he actually said he thinks it’s unlikely he’ll win the Home Run Derby, even if it isn’t impossible.
“I think my chances are pretty low.”

Oddsmakers with DraftKings seem to be aligned with Betts. Entering the Derby on Monday night, Betts had just +1000 odds to win the thrilling contest. In other words, not many expect one of the game’s best outfielders to come out on top.
With Betts also paired against one of the slugging favorites, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., I have to say I agree.
There are worthy longshot bets to make for this edition of the Home Run Derby. If Betts himself is writing off an opportunity to win, he’s probably someone to safely avoid making a wager on.
