CNN Anchor Jim Acosta Falsely Claims Democrats Don’t Support Abortions Up to Birth
CNN anchor Jim Acosta falsely claimed Sunday that Democrat leaders do not support aborting unborn babies up to birth during an interview with pro-life leader Bob Vander Plaats.
The two spoke about the 2024 presidential election as Democrats prepare to make their pro-abortion agenda a major campaign issue. The Democratic Party supports legalized abortions without limits and wants to force taxpayers to pay for them.
Vander Plaats, the president and CEO of The Family Leader in Iowa, said he believes Democrats’ pro-abortion position is a big mistake and voters want a “champion” who will fight to uphold the “sanctity of human life” in America.
When he described Americans as “more pro-life than ever,” Acosta interrupted him to argue the contrary.
“That’s just not the case,” the CNN host responded, pointing to polls that show Americans disagree with the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Although what Acosta said is technically true, poll results vary widely depending on the questions asked. When polls ask more specific questions about abortion laws, they consistently show that most Americans oppose what Roe did: force states to allow abortions up to viability and allow states to legalize abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy. Polls show strong public opposition to taxpayer-funded abortions, too.
But these are the positions of the Democratic Party, something Vander Plaats pointed out in the interview.

“Where Americans really disagree is the extreme position of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and Gov. Newsom of abortion on demand until the time of birth and the government subsidizes and pays for it,” he told Acosta. “I believe what [Americans] want to do is have a champion for the culture of the sanctity of human life.”
But Acosta interrupted him, saying: “Democrats are not in favor of abortions right up until birth. That is not true.”
Vander Plaats replied: “Someone’s got to tell Gov. Newsom that and … President Biden that as well.”
The Biden administration has been pressuring Congress to “codify Roe” with a bill nicknamed the Abortion Without Limits Up to Birth Act. If it passes, the bill would erase basically all abortion restrictions nationwide, including parental consent for minors, informed consent and bans on late-term and taxpayer-funded abortions. States would be forced to allow abortions for any reason up to viability again as well as abortions through all nine months for vaguely defined “health” reasons.
Polls consistently show most Americans oppose such extreme measures. A new poll from the Tarrance Group found 77 percent support at least some prohibitions on abortion. In contrast, only 15 percent believe abortions should be “allowed throughout all nine months of pregnancy, without any restrictions” — the position of the Biden administration and the Democrat Party.
