Steamers Shutout Greenbrier, Staff Flirts with Perfection
Edenton, NC – The Knights arrived in Edenton without their shining armor at the dish. The Edenton Steamers defeated the Greenbrier Knights, 7-0, Monday night at Historic Hicks Field. The Clams’ pitching dominated while the offense sent the baseball all over the diamond.
The dominance started with right-handed starting pitcher Ethan Levy. Levy retired the first 11 batters he faced and finished the game with 4.0 IP, 1 hit, and 1 strikeout.
Levy has now tossed 7 innings in two starts with only one unearned run allowed and 1 hit for the Clams.
Up next out of the pen was southpaw, Reuben Costin. Costin tossed 2.0 innings, 1 walk, and three strikeouts to win his second game of the season. So far this season the East Stroudsburg Warrior has had his most success coming out of the bullpen.
In two starts (3.2 IP), Costin has allowed 7 earned runs, 8 walks, and 8 hits. In six relief appearances (11.1 IP), he has allowed only 3 earned runs, 5 total hits, and 7 walks.
In the 7th inning, Ben Bausas relieved Costin and continued sitdown Greenbrier batters with ease. The 2023 PCL All-Star pitched 2.0 innings and retired six straight batters including three on strikes. Bausas has not allowed a run across since June 18th against the Disco Turkeys, 5 appearances and 15.2 innings ago.
In the ninth inning with the Clams in control, Tyrus Baumgardner came in to put the cherry on top. The West Virginia native pitched a clean 1-2-3 inning to seal the victory.
The group as a whole allowed just three total base runners, only one reached second base. An infield single by Knights Brody Miller, an error by Ryan Kay in left, and a two-out walk by Reubin Costin in the sixth.
While the pitching was lights out, the offense produced against the Greenbrier arms.
In the first inning, a pair of All-Stars produced the first run. Geomar Santana roped a double into left field with one out before Ryan Kay brought him in to make the score, 1-0.
In the fifth inning, the rest of the team joined in against starter Scott McDonough. After Tate Abbott grounded out to begin the inning six straight Steamers reached on four singles, a walk, and a fielder’s choice. The teal and black plated three in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.
A few innings later the Knights became to unravel in the field. Greenbrier reliever John McCarthy struck out four Steamers in the bottom of the seventh. Two of the four came around to score.
The Steamers plated two in the inning on a drop third strike (one of two in the inning) and a two-RBI double by Davis Halstead, 7-0 Clams.
After a five-run-four-hit performance against the Knights on Saturday the Steamers scored 7 runs on 11 hits.
The Clams have now won at least four games in a row for the third time this season, the first since June 20th-28th.
Edenton will be back in action Tuesday night when the Steamers play host to the non-PCL opponent, Wake Forest Fungo, at Historic Hicks Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
