We turned a sailboat into a tiny home to save money – we only pay £465 in rent… but there’s a catch
A COUPLE turned a sailboat into a tiny home to save money and now only pay £465 in rent – but there’s a catch.
Carly and Mike, better known as the Salty Gypsies, took to TikTok to share a video about their life on the water.
The footage, captioned “wouldn’t trade this life of freedom for anything”, detailed their monthly expenses living on a sailboat.
Carly can be heard explaining that the marina moorage fee is between £387 and £464 as she cooks burgers on the waterfront.
The TikTok then cuts to Mike scrubbing the boat’s hull as Carly, who works as a waitress and flight attendant, says maintenance is around £387.
She then reveals the pair spend £426 on groceries, £38 to £232 on petrol depending on how much they cruise, and £6 on propane for the cooker.
Their total spend a month to live on a sailboat comes out at £1,283.
While their new life saves them cash – it does come with a dangerous catch.
One viewer questioned what Carly and Mike, who is in the Navy, did if there was a storm.
They responded: “We try to avoid them, but sometimes we just have to sail through them.
“Makes for fun stories around a nice cold drink when we make it to safety.”
Another asked: “Hope this isn’t rude but is insurance costly?”
The duo replied: “Actually, insurance will vary depending on whether you live aboard and where you cruise. 1,160£/year for us right now.”
A third quipped: “£426 on groceries? Is this from 2008?”
A fourth person said: “What about in the winter?”
Carly and Mike answered: “We have electric heaters at the dock and we have a kerosene furnace for when we sail.
“We will soon add a wood stove for cozy nights.”
