11 Killed, Over 50 Injured in Tribal Clashes in Pakistan’s KP
Over the last four days of ongoing tribal clashes in the Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), a land dispute resulted in the killing of 11 people and over 50 others injured, according to local media outlets.
Last Friday, tribal clashes erupted between two tribes over a land dispute that killed at least nine persons and over 50 injured.
On Tuesday, two more people were killed due to the dispute over a piece of land between the tribes in the area, taking the total number of causalities to 11.
Due to the blockage of roads in the affected area, local people face several challenges, including food, medicines, and fuel access. The disruption of daily living has also affected educational institutions in the area.
“The police, army and tribal elders are trying to reach a ceasefire between the warring tribes in Pewar, Balishkhel and Khar Kallay areas,” said Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resources Development Sajid Hussain Turi, Dawn reported.
Turi also promised to bring the situation soon to return to normal and under control.
A day earlier, protests against the dangerous situation in Kurram were held in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and other parts of Pakistan.
According to reports, there were clashes on Tuesday in Pewar, Gidu, Baleshkhel, Khar Kallay, Sadda, Chamkani, and Kunj Alizai. The updated death toll was confirmed by Dr Qaiser Abbas Banghash, Medical Superintendent of Kurram District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ), who noted that 67 persons had been injured in the clashes so far, Dawn reported.
Syed Saiful Islam Shah, the deputy commissioner for Kurram, said that attempts were being undertaken in conjunction with tribal elders to put an end to the skirmishes.
He pointed out that ceasefire agreements had been established in various parts of the area. However, they violated the ceasefire.
“Due to repeated violation of the ceasefire agreements, the situation has not yet been controlled,” he said. Minister Turi also called on the provincial and federal governments to take immediate steps to stop the clashes.
He highlighted the importance of taking legal action against individuals who continued to violate the ceasefire agreements.
