Sports briefs: Redwood’s Solle commits to play baseball at UCLA
Redwood High standout Rex Solle announced his commitment to play baseball for UCLA via Twitter on Monday.
Solle, a rising senior, was named the second best pitcher in the MCAL by the coaches this past season, behind teammate Rory Minty who was named the Pitcher of the Year.
Solle went 5-3 with a 1.24 earned-run average, with 110 strikeouts against 25 walks in 67.2 innings for the Giants, helping the team finish second in league with a 12-4 regular-season record.
Offensively, Solle hit .337 with 28 hits, 12 RBIs and 19 runs scored.
- Nick Smith had three hits and Grant Victor droves in three runs as the San Rafael Pacifics fell 8-5 against the Vallejo Seaweed on Sunday night.
San Rafael (30-8 Pecos League) started off with three runs in the top of the first but Vallejo (9-28) scratched out runs in six of eight innings to gradually pull away.
Pacifics ace Alex Valasek had a rare bad outing, allowing 10 hits, five walks and eight runs (six earned) in eight innings of work.
Kyle Guerra, Kevin Johnson, Victor, and John Bicos all had two hits apiece for San Rafael.
- Former San Marin High standout John Holtz went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs as the Novato Knicks lost 5-2 against the Alameda Anchors on Sunday.
Little League
The Mill Valley 11s took back-to-back losses on Sunday and Monday to end their season one step short of the NorCal Section 1 title game. Mill Valley took its first loss of the postseason 5-0 against Benicia on Sunday then fell 7-5 against Lafayette on Monday night.
Lafayette and Benicia will play for the title on Tuesday in Petaluma with a second game on Wednesday, if necessary.
Mill Valley outhit Lafayette 11-9 in the elimination game but fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning. A three-run rally in the third inning helped Mill Valley tied the game before the teams exchanged single runs in the fifth to tie the game again at 5-5.
Lafayette plated two runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good. Mill Valley finished the postseason with a 10-2 record.
Five different players at two hits apiece for Mill Valley on Monday — Davis Marshall, Oscar Karlen, Brodie Williams, Hudson Wayne, and Teddy Klaassen. Wayne doubled to drive in a run to make it 4-2 then later came around to tie the game following a single by Marshall.
- The West Marin Juniors saw their season come to a close following a 4-3 loss against Sonoma on Sunday. West Marin was limited to one hit but benefitted from four Sonoma errors. West Marin scored a run in the top of the sixth to pull within 4-3.
Running
Mill Valley’s Terry Hermiston placed 74th overall in the Napa Half-Marathon on Sunday. He was fastest in the men’s age 60-64 group with a net time of 1 hour, 39 minutes, 2 seconds. Tiburon’s Lara McCaskill crossed the finish line 88th overall, with a time of 1:40:52. She was third in the women’s 40-44 age group.
