CT juvenile accidentally shoots self in leg. Police discover gun was stolen.
A juvenile is facing weapon charges after accidentally shooting himself in the leg inside an East Haven home on Sunday.
The East Haven Public Safety Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a juvenile saying he had just accidentally shot himself in the leg while handling a firearm inside a home on Hughes Street Sunday, according to the East Haven Police Department.
Officers found the juvenile in the living room of the home suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg and provided medical attention until the East Haven Fire Department arrived, police said.
“The .40 caliber firearm used in the shooting was located within the residence and was determined to have been stolen out of North Carolina in 2011,” said East Haven Cpt. Joseph M. Murgo in a release on Monday.
The juvenile was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Several other juveniles were in the home at the time of the shooting, but no other injuries were reported, according to police.
“The juvenile was later released from the hospital and into the custody of the East Haven Police Department,” Murgo said.
The juvenile was charged with illegal discharge of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm, according to police.
The juvenile was released to a guardian and was scheduled to appear at Superior Court for Juvenile Matters in New Haven on Monday, police said.
