Teen Threw Her Newborn Baby in the Trash, Attended Prom Weeks Later
A New Mexico teenager who allegedly murdered her newborn son in January was spotted attending her high school prom in April, smiling arm in arm with the baby’s father.
The Artesia Police Department said Alexee Trevizo, 19, of Artesia, locked herself in a hospital bathroom, gave birth and then threw her newborn son in a trash can on Jan. 27. At the time, the teenager said her baby was stillborn, according to authorities.
A new report from the Daily Mail found that Trevizo returned to high school and later attended prom on April 22 with her boyfriend Devyn Fierro, the baby’s father, who also likely knew of the infant’s death. A photo shared with the news outlet shows the couple dressed up and smiling arm in arm.
Trevizo was arrested on first-degree murder charges less than a month later after authorities said an autopsy found the infant died of asphyxiation.
Friends of Trevizo’s said they suspected that she was pregnant, but she denied it, according to Live Action News.

Melody Smith, a photographer who took their photo at the prom, said she did not know anything about Trevizo and Fierro or their baby at the time.
“… but when I looked back on the photos, I remembered [Trevizo] because I remember how unusual I thought it was that she wore such a short dress,” Smith said. “She was holding her boyfriend’s arm, it was big smiles. They were excited to be at prom. You would never have known.”
Afterward, Smith said she learned that there “was some retaliation about the fact she had been allowed to attend [and] I realized what had happened.”
Trevizo was released on $100,000 bond, and her trial is scheduled for Oct. 2, according to Live Action.
Infanticide and infant abandonment are problems across the world.
Like abortion, infanticide destroys the life of a unique and valuable child who is fully dependent on his/her parents to survive. The pro-life movement works to protect newborns from infanticide as well as abortion by supporting safe haven laws, adoption and resources to help pregnant and parenting families.
In America, all 50 states have safe haven laws that allow mothers to safely surrender their newborns to authorities, often at a police station or hospital, without repercussions as long as the infant is unharmed. Several states also have baby boxes installed in fire stations where women can safely surrender newborns. Typically, laws allow safe surrender within a certain time limit, such as up to 30 days after the baby’s birth.
