Ashes 2023: Stage Set For Another Fiery Encounter With Resurgent England Ahead On Mental Points
The Ashes are looked forward to by almost all corners of the cricketing world, often for the quality of cricket but almost always with the sign dish of some new controversy cropping up, and the battle lines being re-drawn.
With the Jonny Bairstow incident at Lord’s in Ashes 2023 keeping the indignation factor alive among the host team, fans and media, every little step taken by both the sides, as always, will be under the microscope. Not to mention, of course, the excellent cricket being played, as England pulled one back on Australia at Leeds to keep the series alive.
The war of words about Lord’s, not least that about the little fracas between the Lord’s Long Room boys and the Aussies, hasn’t really died down. Usman Khawaja, one of those who got into a little argument in Long Room, has gone on record about how the he would not want his kids anywhere around such places, so bad is the language.
The chant of “Cheats” has not died down completely and Australia are always on an edge about how the hosts get on their case, again.
But then, they need to keep their focus on what is on the ground. They could well be struggling if England keep their Leeds mental make-up and cricket alive.
On that front, few have matched England skipper Ben Stokes, who has been able to keep his eyes on the ball and was to a large extent responsible for England’s recovery. For that matter, he might even have seen his side ahead, such were the margins of defeats in the first two Tests.
Equally, the third Test was also down to the wire and Pat Cummins could well have sealed off a series win, but that was not to be.
One of the biggest events on the cricket calendar, the Ashes really do keep you engaged, almost as much as an India-Australia series. Here’s hoping for some more action, both on and off the field, come Wednesday.
