Trump will face charges for trying to overturn the election 'within days': law professor
Former President Donald Trump appears headed for his third indictment of the year, as special counsel Jack Smith sent him a target letter in connection with the January 6 investigation.
And we won't have to wait much longer for it, predicted former Harvard Law professor Laurence Tribe on CNN Tuesday evening.
"A conservative former judge, Michael Luttig, who counseled [Mike Pence] on how to handle the election certification vote, he wrote today, 'There is not a single attorney general or special counsel of either party who would not bring charges against the former president for his efforts on January 6 to overturn the 2020 presidential election. He has dared, taunted, provoked, and goaded DOJ to prosecute him for offenses on and relating to January 6 for two and half years. The former president has left Jack Smith with no choice but to bring charges, lest the former president make a mockery of the Constitution of the United States and the Rule of Law,'" said anchor Anderson Cooper. "Do you agree with him?"
"I agree completely with Judge Luttig," said Tribe, a consistent critic of the former president. "Special counsel Jack Smith had no choice."
"And the target letter is one that makes it absolutely clear that within days — we don't know if it will be this week or at the very beginning of next week — Donald Trump will finally be indicted for his role in the attempt to overturn the election by any means possible, including aiding and abetting in insurrection, the most serious charge short of treason that could be launched against a former president," added Tribe.
Asked why he is so certain it will be that imminent, Tribe said, "I do think it is more likely to be quicker this time because we have seen a parade of people called by the grand jury, all the people around Donald Trump, and really nothing left for the special counsel to do but to actually the former president. I would be surprised if it were as long as a week or two."
