Steamers Fall To Scallywags, Clams Pitching Gives Way in Loss
Manteo, NC – The Outer Banks offense made the Steamers’ arms walk the plank in a disappointing loss for the Clams. The Outer Banks Scallywags defeated the Steamers, 11-7, Tuesday in Manteo. The Steamers pitching surrendered seven runs in the fifth and the sixth innings to give the game away.
The barrage started against Clams reliever Reuben Costin in a 4-4 game. Costin surrendered three hits (one extra-base hit), three runs, a walk, and a fielder’s choice. The left-handed arm allowed the first five batters to reach in the inning before giving way to John Horton. Horton came in and got out of the inning, 7-4 Outer Banks in front.
The very next inning was more of the same for Outer Banks. With Horton still in, the Scallywags scored four runs on a cycle in the inning. Second baseman Aidan Feather hit a home run to lead off the frame followed by a single to James Duncan, a double by Hayden Friese, and a triple by Cole Mascolo. The Scallywags got another run across on an RBI fielders choice to make the game 11-4.
All of that offensive production with one of the best Clams arms statistically on the mound, John Horton. It was the first time since June 11th that Horton allowed a hit or a run let alone four.
Tyrus Baumgardner and William Stewart followed up Horton with two scoreless innings to give the bats a chance but the deficit was too large in the end. The Steamers used six total pitchers that allowed 11 runs on 12 hits. Edenton used just four pitchers to get through the past two ball games.
Ethan Levy started the game for the teal and black and struggled to find any rhythm in the strike zone through the two innings. The right-handed arm finished with 1.2 innings pitched four walks, three hits, four runs (all earned), and one strikeout.
Alex Gianascoli was the first out of the pen and tossed 2.1 innings with only one run allowed before Costin entered in the fifth.
On the offensive side, the Clams fought back in the early going but struggled to get anything going late. In the second inning, designated hitter Khris Morris started the scoring off with an RBI single to (at the time) tie the game up at 1.
An inning later, with the game now 4-1, Edenton put some hits together aided by some sloppy Outer Banks defense. Tanner Knowles knocked in one with an RBI single and Ryan Kay reached on a fielding error to push another run across to make the game, 4-3.
In the fifth inning, with the score still 4-3, Kay produced with a runner in scoring position. The left fielder drove in Davis Halstead to tie up the ball game at 4.
After the Outer Banks struck gold at the plate against the Steamers relievers, the Clams produced just three runs on two hits, two hit-by-pitches, and a walk the rest of the way.
The Scallywags have now won the last two games against the Steamers and three out of the last four games. Over the past two games, Outer Banks has outscored the Steamers 18-7. Edenton will have a chance to return the favor on Friday night when the two teams face off at Historic Hicks Field.
The Clams will take a day in the sound to regroup as the Fightin’ Fruits come off of the vine for one last time. The Chowan County Cantaloupes will take the field for the final time this season against the Norfolk Redbirds, Wednesday night at Historic Hicks Field. First Pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
