Revealed: Source says Trump’s J6 target letter mentions conspiracy and obstruction
The special counsel’s letter to Donald Trump alerting the former president that he’s the target of Jack Smith’s investigation over efforts to overturn the 2020 election lists conspiracy and obstruction among the federal statutes under which Trump is likely to be charged, Rolling Stone reports.
The letter doesn’t include sedition or insurrection as statutes under investigation by the special counsel, an unnamed source told the outlet.
Trump on Tuesday morning in a post on his Truth Social website confirmed that he received the target letter, calling the development “HORRIFYING NEWS."
Trump said he was told he has “a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment."
The letter identifies three federal statutes: Conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud the United States; deprivation of rights under color of law; and tampering with a witness, victim, or an informant, according to the report.
The letter reveals no additional details about the charges or additional information on how the special counsel determined Trump may have violated the statutes, the report said.
The source said the statutes listed likely refer to the prosecutor’s interest in charging Trump with obstructing the election certification process, including Trump efforts to pressure Mike Pence to stop the certification of President Biden’s 2020 victory.
