Report: Central defender set to undergo Spurs medical in the next 24 hours

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Blackburn Rovers central defender Ashley Phillips is due for a medical at Hotspur Way in the next 24 hours ahead of a switch to Tottenham Hotspur (Football.London).

Phillips broke into Blackburn’s senior side last season, making a total of 14 appearances across all competitions for the Championship side (Transfermarkt).

The 18-year-old is considered by many at Ewood Park to be a potential future star but it was reported by The Daily Mirror’s James Nursey on Tuesday that the teenager is on his way out of the club.

The journalist explained that Tottenham are set to take advantage of Blackburn’s financial cut-backs by landing the centre back on the cheap.

Ashley Phillips set for Spurs medical

Gold has now suggested that Tottenham are expected to finalise Phillips’ capture in a deal worth around £3m.

It is said that Phillips will complete his medical at Tottenham’s training facility within the next day and board a flight to join up with Ange Postecoglou‘s senior squad in Asia after signing on the dotted line.

However, Gold made it clear that Phillips is seen as one for the future and is not expected to be one of the two main centre-backs which Tottenham are looking to bring in this summer.

If Spurs want Phillips to link up with the senior squad for pre-season, that suggests the club believe that the 18-year-old might not be too far away from being good enough to challenge for a place in the senior set-up.

Hopefully, Spurs can get a deal over the line for either Micky van de Ven or Edmond Tapsoba in the coming days.
