At least 11 Killed in Wall Collapse in Islamabad Amid Heavy Rains
At least 11 people were killed, and six others were injured on Wednesday after a building’s wall under construction collapsed at Islamabad’s Peshawar Road during the heavy rains.
The tragedy occurs after intense rainfall that hit the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad over the past week, flooding low-lying areas and posing risks to residents.
Khan Zeb, the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Industrial Area I-9, said the equipment was used to extract the 11 victims’ bodies from the debris.
The wall under which the labourers had erected a tent to live at the construction site was reportedly 100 feet wide and 11 feet tall.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), today is likely to see heavy rain across the province of Punjab, which will cause urban flooding in low-lying districts of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore.
During that time, the alert said it may also trigger landslides in the vulnerable areas of Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Last month eight people lost their lives in Lahore as record-breaking monsoon rains created urban floods that inundated several different neighbourhoods, including low-lying areas.
