The five blunders you’re making which could kill your microwave – and why running it on empty is a huge mistake
AN appliance expert has shared the five major mistakes your making which could be a disaster for your microwave.
It turns out there’s much more you shouldn’t put in there than you might think.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, AO’s microwave expert, Katy Roberts, explained what you should think twice about putting in your microwave.
Tin foil
This is the one most people already know about – which is a good thing because it can be very dangerous if microwaved.
Foil can heat up extremely quickly, causing dangerous sparks and even a fire, the pro noted.
Cardboard
Both cardboard and paper bags should be kept away from your microwave, Katy said, because they’re huge fire hazards.
Not only that, but some of the other materials within carboard can be dangerous as well.
Glues and waxes are often on cardboard and paper bags without people realising, and these shouldn’t be heated up.
Nothing
Running your microwave on empty is a bag idea, according to the pro.
She said: “As the radiation builds in the empty microwave because it has no food to absorb the microwaves, this is sent back to the magnetron.
“This damages the device and could start a fire if left unattended for long enough.”
Platic
Although you can safely microwave certain plastics, not all of them are safe.
The pro explained: “Single-use plastics like Styrofoam, cling film, or even takeout containers should not be placed in the microwave.
“When these materials are heated up, they will either melt or ruin your food. Instead, place these contents onto a microwaveable plate.”
Boiled eggs
Of course, some eggs can be cooked in the microwave, but boiled eggs are a big no-no.
The egg can actually explode if they get too hot in there, which will be a huge pain to clean up but could hurt too, Katy warned.
So, stick to scrambled eggs in the microwave and cook your boiled eggs the traditional way.
