People aren’t sure what to expect from Justin Fields this year. They know he will continue being a dangerous rushing threat. That isn’t the concern. It’s always been about whether he can morph into a capable passer. His 149 yards per game and 17-to-11 touchdown-interception ratio left many questioning if it was the right decision to stick with him as the starter. GM Ryan Poles hasn’t wavered in that belief. He made that clear when he spent a massive amount of resources this off-season on upgrading the offense.
Wide receiver D.J. Moore arrived via trade. Nate Davis came in as a free agent at guard. Right tackle Darnell Wright became their 1st round pick. Now Cole Kmet has been locked up to a four-year extension. The Bears are investing in Fields. By most accounts, he is rewarding that faith. After looking sharp in OTAs and minicamps earlier this summer, the quarterback has only gained steam. Reports indicate he was on the money most of the first day of training camp, delivering some absolute strikes in team drills.
Strong first day for Justin Fields. Very few balls on the ground.
Best play: Good deep ball to DJ Moore for TD. Moore used his body perfectly to create space on Tyrique Stevenson and Fields put it in the perfect spot.
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus: “I thought the operation on offense was good for the first day.” Said you usually see false starts, other hiccups on Day 1, but that wasn’t the case today.
Justin Fields’ chemistry with his receivers is building.
He and D.J. Moore struck again in 11-on-11s with one of the throws of the day, a dime in the corner of the end zone over rookie cornerback Tyrique Stevenson. He also found Chase Claypool for another score on a slant. The fact everybody was executing at a high level despite it being the first practice following a long layoff is encouraging. What makes it even better is that Darnell Mooney wasn’t even a full go yet. He was limited in drills as the coaches worked to ramp him up. Once the entire receiving corps is in place, the Bears will finally see what they really have.
It is hard not to get excited about such updates. Justin Fields still has to prove himself against live bullets. However, to hear how well he’s managed to reduce his mistakes this year is nothing but a positive sign. His mastery of the offense is becoming evident, bleeding into the rest of his teammates. Everybody is focused. This team is aiming to win in 2023. Fields intends to lead the way. He knows how important this year is for him. If he can deliver a statement season through the air, he has a massive payday waiting for him on the other side.
