Darnell Wright Shut Guys Down During First Day In Pads
Most of the excitement during the first day in pads for Chicago Bears training camp was centered on the wide receivers and Justin Fields. That is hardly a surprise. They are expected to carry the offense to a higher level this season, hopefully to more victories. It appears they didn’t disappoint in their first audition. D.J. Moore, Chase Claypool, Darnell Mooney, and rookie Tyler Scott took turns making nice plays against the Bears defense. However, some fans know the key to all of this is how well the offensive line can protect Fields. That is why Darnell Wright comes into the picture.
GM Ryan Poles drafted the right tackle out of Tennessee 10th overall. He feels the young man has franchise potential with his size, length, power, and athleticism. He arrived at camp in outstanding shape, having dropped 16 lbs from his reported 330 during the pre-draft process. Pads would finally allow him to show whether he could live up to those high expectations. He didn’t disappoint. Wright looked quick, active, and sturdy in daily passing drills, often stonewalling pass rushers.
His footwork and initial punch stand out right away. For a rookie, he seems far more advanced technically than is normal. Even better is that he did it without chips or tight end help.
Darnell Wright wasn’t perfect.
He occasionally struggled against Trevis Gipson during drills, which is hardly a surprise. It’s worth noting the rookie had some wins against the veteran too. There was also a false start penalty on him early in practice. He rebounded on the next play, delivering a strong block that allowed Fields to find Cole Kmet for a 1st down. Coaches and teammates can already see what makes him a special talent. Teven Jenkins stated the most “mindblowing” thing about him is his recovery speed. Even if he’s initially beaten on a rep, he has the feet and anchor to rebound before the rusher can get through. Guys his size aren’t supposed to move like that.
Nobody in their right mind should expect Darnell Wright to be great right away. He will have some tough stretches this year. That happens with rookies. Still, it’s obvious he looks the part. His athleticism stands out, as does his physicality and attention to detail. Things should fall into place once he gets acclimated to what he’ll see from NFL pass rushers. Braxton Jones needed around half the season last year before he figured things out. Some at Halas Hall think it won’t take Wright nearly as long.
