Teen Mom’s Daughter Graduates From Nursing Program She Helped Create
Having a child at age 15 did not destroy Dr. Dorothy Miller’s life.
Instead, the baby girl challenged her young mother to work hard to create a better life for them both. Now, Miller serves as the department chair of the St. Andrews University health services program in Laurinburg, North Carolina, and her daughter just graduated from the nursing program that she helped to create.
Their inspiring story, featured at Breitbart, demonstrates the amazing possibilities when a mother chooses life for her unborn baby even in the most difficult circumstances.
“What some people saw as a mistake, having a child so young, to me was a catalyst,” Miller said. “By having her, it pushed me to do something outside of me so that I could have a better future for her.”
According to the report, Miller found out that she was pregnant in ninth grade and gave birth to her daughter, Chaquita Bandy, when she was only 15.

Growing up in a poor, rural community, Miller said her mother helped get her through the toughest times by making sure she went back to school and watching Chaquita.
“My mother had to stop going to school when she was in the third grade because she had to go work on the farms. She knew that education would be the vehicle that would take me to a better future,” she told People magazine.
After spending time in the military, Miller said she enrolled in nursing school and began working two jobs as a single mother – all the while her mother continued to encourage her and help raise her daughter.
Many years have gone by since then, and today both Miller and her daughter are thriving. On May 7, Chaquita graduated from the nursing program at St. Andrews University – a program that Miller helped to create two years ago, according to the report.
A remarkable coincidence, Chaquita said she recently looked at her and her mother’s diplomas and realized they both graduated from nursing school on the same date 13 years apart.
“I said, ‘Did you know that you graduated on May 7?’ And she was like, ‘Really?’ Then I opened mine and I was like, ‘We graduated on the same day!’” she remembered.
Chaquita said she is thankful that her mother and grandmother trusted God through those early years, because their love and sacrifices gave her the life she enjoys today.
“A person’s walk of life is not linear and sometimes you veer off course. But despite your missteps, you have to trust that God knows your purpose and path — and he will get you to where you supposed to be,” she told People.
Teenage pregnancy is incredibly difficult, but Miller and her mother recognized that her unborn baby’s life was valuable. Because she chose life, Miller not only gave her daughter the gift of life but also the opportunity to thrive.
