I was given the most inappropriate wedding favor – they thought it was cute, but context matters folks
A WEDDING guest has described her shock after receiving the most inappropriate wedding favor.
She said the bride and groom thought it was cute, but she felt their special day was sullied by it.
It quoted a notorious novel and far as she was concerned, this was one cultural reference too far.
In the book, a literature professor, Humbert Humbert, becomes obsessed with Dolores, who is only 12 years old.
She shared her experience with the online forum Reddit and there was an incredibly strong response to her experience.
The overwhelming feeling was that this particular wedding favor should have been more carefully thought through.
This lady did a screengrab and shared it in her post: “I was given this as a wedding favor last weekend. Context matters, folks,” she said.
The slip of paper said: “It was love at first sight, at last sight, at ever and ever sight.”
It was a quote from the notorious novel, Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov, which featured kidnap and sexual abuse.
It most certainly is not associated with romantic love.
There were 1.3 thousand comments on her post, the universal reaction was a mix of bafflement and shock.
Commenters didn’t mince their words.
You have to have knowledge of Lolita to appreciate how inappropriate the quote was, said this person: “It sounds benign and sweet enough — unless you’ve actually read the book.”
“It’s a great book and movie but definitely not a love story,” said this literature fan.
Another agreed saying it was a book “about obsession and abuse.”
Many wondered about the decision to include a Lolita quote in the first place: “I would definitely question the judgment of the person who decided this was appropriate.”
Others tried to rationalize the bride and groom’s decision.
“I’m guessing the married couple just bought a set online that had probably been put together with minimal oversight,” figured this commenter.
Perhaps the couple should have done a bit more research said this person.
“Not ashamed to say I didn’t know the context as I didn’t read that book [but] I would probably have done before using quotes to share with my guests.”
Similarly, this commenter said more care should have been taken.
“Probably the result of a lazy a**, and/or cheap, wedding planner. That or the bride went on Pinterest, barely looked at it, thought it was cute, and gave it zero other thoughts.”
