Georgia man charged after hit-and-run crash in Montgomery Co. kills 1, injures 9
One woman was killed and several others, including three children, were hurt after a multivehicle crash on the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County, Maryland, late Tuesday night.
Maryland State Police said 23-year-old Jayleen Hannor, of Macon, Georgia, was under the influence of alcohol and behind the wheel of a Mercedes SUV that was going the wrong way before crashing into two cars on the Beltway in North Bethesda.
Hannor was charged with driving under the influence and failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of an accident involving death, according to state police. Additional charges are possible, authorities said.
According to police, the series of events leading to the crash began about 11:45 p.m. when Hannor drove the wrong way in the northbound lanes on Interstate 270 near Rockledge Drive. State police said troopers received numerous calls about the Mercedes goin the wrong way.
Police said Hannor then continued going the wrong way onto the outer loop of the Beltway where he crashed into two other vehicles — a Lexus and a Nissan Pathfinder — in the northbound lanes near Maryland Route 355.
The driver of the Nissan, a woman, was taken to the hospital, where she later died.
All told, nine other people were hurt.
One other adult and three children in the Nissan were injured, state police said. Five adults in the Lexus were also taken to the hospital with injuries.
Police said Hannor attempted to flee the scene after the crash before being taken into custody.
