Chicago Bears Sign DE Yannick Ngakoue: Is the Division Title Within Reach?
The Chicago Bears have finally secured the services of defensive end Yannick Ngakoue. The current question now revolves around the extent of impact on the NFC North due to this addition. In the most recent episode of the BFR Podcast, now partnered with Sports Mockery, we discussed the signing and what it means for the team moving forward.
The Bears Addressed A Crucial Position
Until Thursday night, it was widely acknowledged that the Bears needed an edge rusher. However, with the acquisition of Ngakoue, they have now filled this gap on their roster. During our podcast, we talked on the potential increase in the Bears number of wins that could result from such a signing.
My take leans towards a range of 0.5 to 1 full game. I believe that Ngakoue’s presence could change the outcome of a game, leaving Justin Fields with a final opportunity to go win a game in crunch time. This was a missing element in the Bears’ defense throughout last season. On the other hand, Ficky, one of the co-hosts of the BFR Podcast, expressed more optimism, suggesting that this move might lead to a two-game improvement. Personally, I lean towards the optimistic viewpoint as well. I think this signing will have a similar domino effect to the addition of DJ Moore to the Bears’ wide receiver room. Definitely not same magnitude but it will undoubtedly leave an impact on the defensive side and the locker room in general.
Is The NFC Title Now Within Reach?
This is a fun topic to think about. Typically, a single defensive player doesn’t have a significant impact on a team’s performance. However, Khalil Mack defied this narrative in 2018. He joined the team in August too and notably changed entire expectations for that Bears roster. Interestingly enough, the Bears are once again set to face the Packers in week 1, but this time without Aaron Rodgers. Now, let me clarify, Yannick Ngakoue might not be on Khalil Mack’s level, but his production is impressive. He recorded 19.5 sacks over his last two seasons and has consistently had 8+ sack since entering the league. His expertise in pressuring quarterbacks is undeniable. Assuming the Bears offense and Justin Fields make significant progress, there’s a strong chance this team could contend for the NFC North championship by December. It is going to be very fun to watch.
