Schedule Set For Inagural Mustang Challenge Season

The calendar for the inaugural season of the one-make Mustang Challenge series for the Ford Mustang Dark Horse R has been revealed today.

The schedule features five rounds for the IMSA-sanctioned series at Mid Ohio, Watkins Glen, Road America, CoTA and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Four of the five race weekends have dates, the outlier being the season finale at Charlotte Motor Speedway (home of the Ford Performance Racing School) which doesn’t currently have a confirmed weekend. While there is no confirmation at this stage, the round in North Carolina would appear to be a prime candidate for a slot on the undercard of the NASCAR Cup Series’ annual Bank of America Roval 400.

The first three rounds of the season will see the Mustang Challenge feature on the same bill as other IMSA series. At Mid-Ohio, it will join Pilot Challenge and VP Racing SportsCar Challenge, while at Watkins Glen and Road America, it will feature alongside Pilot Challenge and the WeatherTech series.

Interestingly, the fourth round of the season at Circuit of The Americas in Texas from August 31st to September 1st will see the Mustang Challenge race on the support bill for the FIA WEC’s Lone Star Le Mans weekend.

Mustang Challenge will host a full field of Mustang Dark Horse R racecars running on bespoke race tyres from official series partner Michelin. Each round will consist of two practice sessions, one qualifying session and two sprint races.

The Dark Horse R was revealed last month and forms part of a new range of Ford Performance Mustang race cars.
