Bronzed Aussies on final day of World U19 Championships
Australia has celebrated a Bronze Medal to close out an eventful U19 World Championships in Paris, with the Women’s Pair of Katie Jackson and Lucy Richardson rowing their way onto the podium in their A Final.
After days of difficult conditions and disrupted schedules, the Jamie McDonald-coached duo held their nerve to bring home a deserved medal, finishing behind Romania’s Ionela Elena Scutaru and Gabriela Tivodariu, who were quick out of the start and were never headed.
The Australians founds themselves in a tight battle with Greece’s Christina Papaioannou and Dimitra Papaioannou and the Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) boat of Kira Kavalenka and Milana Darakhavets for the minor medals and edged out the latter by just 0.13s.
”We’ve had storms, we’ve had all of the conditions thrown at us. Just expect the unexpected and believe in yourself,” Richardson told World Rowing after the race.
In other final day results in the truncated program, the Women’s Four (Georgia Montague, Greta Spencer, Lyla Fievez, Minaya Bishop) took out the B Final for seventh-placed overall finish, as did the Women’s Double Sculls crew of Eliza Bridgefoot and Liesel Page.
And there was another win on the program for the Men’s Double Scull of Jack Power and Chad Willett, who won their B Final to help the Australians finish with a flourish on next year’s Olympic and Paralympic course.
