Eco-yob group bring UCI cycling 270km mega-race to a STANDSTILL as they chain together and GLUE themselves to route
ECO-yobs have thrown the UCI Cycling World Championships into chaos as they disrupted the Men’s Elite Road Race.
Four activists from This is Rigged caused havoc as the world’s top cyclists went pedal to pedal from Edinburgh to Glasgow.
The race was interrupted on a single-track road in the Carron Valley area.
Protesters locked themselves to one another and glued themselves to the road.
It’s thought cyclists could get passed but not the support vehicles.
The incident could delay the event for hours.
Cat, a 21-year-old student, who took part in the action said: “We cannot continue with business as usual while our country burns and our futures are ruined.
“Time is of the essence more than ever, and the longer the Scottish government takes to realise this, the more people will suffer as a result.
“Stand up to Westminster, no new oil and gas. Fair transition now. ”
Footage on the BBC shows a police van making its way slowly through the peloton as they try to reach the disruption.
A spokesperson for the UCI Cycling World Championships said: “Further to Police Scotland’s confirmation of a protest in the Carron Valley area, which has temporarily interrupted the Men’s Road Race, we are working closely with all relevant authorities to minimise disruption to the race and also to ensure the safety of riders as our paramount concern.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “We’re aware of a protest in the Carron Valley area.
“Officers are currently in attendance and engaging with protesters.”
A message appeared during BBC Scotland’s coverage of the event reading: “Men’s road race temporarily interrupted by protesters”.
Last week, four eco-warriors were arrested after red paint was thrown at the Scottish Parliament in a protest over oil and gas licences.
It comes as we exclusively revealed fears that eco-yob group Just Stop Oil would target the major event.
